About Policy Brief

The world's leading research institutes, think tanks, policy centres, public policy analysts and development scholars seek to exercise influence on matters of public interest through the production of short policy briefs. This allows them to become transparently and practically involved in current discussions of immediate or critical concern, and to contribute to shaping policy and influencing public debates.
The Sustainable Futures Policy Briefs Series is a new initiative of the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES) that seeks to respond to breaking issues as well as strengthen information sharing on strategies for action and policy options for sustainable development in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). It will also provide a platform for leading professionals, critical thinkers, public policy analysts and development scholars to speak to matters of global public interest. As such, it allows for a general audience and policy makers to become informed of the comparative research evidence on significant policy issues or be alerted to pertinent recommendations for policy practice to better engage with the challenges facing LAC countries and beyond. Additionally, the Series offers contributors an opportunity to clarify contesting positions, and deepen the democratisation of the policy formation process. In some instances, such interventions may act to influence policy at the time when decisions are being made by governments and regional organizations.
These briefs are not intended to be long and academic but rather aim to provide high quality analyses, advocacy and practical recommendations for policy decision makers on important development issues.
Leadership ethos: To build the leadership profile of SALISES Fellows and The University Community by actively reaching out to secure the support, participation, contribution, and ideas of other colleagues, academics (across the faculties, institutes and campuses), as well as the support and contributions of our graduate students, past and present
SALISES as a leading regional development research centre and policy institute thus seeks to promote critical engagement through such a policy series, given its own and others specialist areas of knowledge or research expertise. Our policy series are guided by the sustainable development agenda as well as by our main policy or research clusters' interests.
Guiding vision : To offer an accessible inter-disciplinary platform for academic, critical and public commentary on human, social, political, economic and environmental development policy challenges being faced in the 21 st century, with special attention to the future for small states, vulnerable populations and spaces.
Organisational framework:
The series, which was ‘officially' launched at the 19 th Annual SALISES Conference, ‘Sustainable Futures for the Caribbean: Critical Interventions and the 2030 Agenda' held on April 25-27, 2018 at the Holiday Inn Resort in Montego Bay, is managed by a Steering Committee composed of SALISES Fellows (to be rotated on a volunteer basis) who offer guidance on quality control and ensure the innovative edge of the series:
